a movement
for the culture
the #mymadras movement began in 2019 as a way to celebrate and preserve an element of Caribbean cultural fashion known as madras fabric.
madras is a plaid fabric originating in india that was incorporated into caribbean culture through the transatlantic slave trade and the desire of our african ancestors to keep elements of their culture alive.
#mymadras celebrates the modern ways that caribbean people (and specifically u.s. virgin islanders) have been keeping the fabric alive.
